A former theory of combustion in which all flammable objects were supposed to contain a substance called phlogiston, which was released when the object burned. Phlogiston, in early chemical theory, hypothetical principle of fire, of which every combustible substance was in part composed. The flame indicates the rapid escape of phlogiston.
